Health Guidelines

1.    First Aid

The school provides only the basic kind of first aid in case of an accident.  If more serious injury is indicated, parents will be notified immediately and the school will take the usual necessary precautions for the comfort of the injured and the prevention of further injury.  A first aid kit is provided in the office, in each classroom, and on the playground.

2.       Emergencies

In case of extreme or very painful injury, the school will immediately call for an ambulance and the injured child will be transported to the hospital.  Parents will be notified and will be asked to meet the ambulance at the hospital.

3.    Health Services

A nurse of the Public Health Department is on call for the school.  The school and Public Health Department cooperate in all matters concerning student health.  Through local agencies the school provides screenings for vision, hearing and scoliosis for the appropriate ages.  Parents are urged to have regular health and dental examinations for their children.

4.    Illness and Absence from School

Parents are encouraged to cooperate with the school by keeping a sick child at home, and informing the school of the nature of the illness.  A signed note from the parent to the child’s teacher is required to explain any absence.  Any child, who is suspected of having a communicable disease or exhibits other signs and symptoms, shall be placed in a separate area. The parent, guardian, or authorized person will then be contacted to pick up the student within 30 minutes of being called.  Symptoms may include:

The school reserves the right to require a written note from a physician regarding the condition, treatment and clearance to return to classes. Guidelines adapted from HRS standards 10M - 12.005 Communicable Disease Control.

5.     Illness onset at school

In the event that a student is at school not feeling well or becomes ill, when contacted a parent or an authorized person needs to pick up the child within 30 minutes of being called.  If a parent cannot come at that time, it is the parent’s responsibility to designate someone to come pick up the child, and inform the school as to whom they have designated.

6.     Medication

No medication will be dispensed to early childhood children who attend morning class sessions, only.  Students who attend full day, no matter their age, will need to adhere to the following procedure.

a.      Medication must be in the original container with the name of the physician, child and medication directions type written on the label.

b.     A written authorization signed by the physician shall accompany any type of medication stating the time and amount of dosage and the name of the medication to be given to the student.

e.      Parents are encouraged to administer medication whenever possible.

f.       All medications must be dispensed from the school office.  State law requires all medication be kept in a locked cabinet out of children’s access.  No child may have any type of medication, either prescribed or over the counter, on their person at any time while on school property.

7.    Head Lice

Random head checks will be done.  Any reported case of head lice must be treated immediately.  The student’s parents will be contacted immediately and the child sent home. The student will be checked again in two days and ten days. Notice regarding an outbreak, suggested treatments and preventative measures will be distributed to all students.  Student(s) will be allowed to return when they are nit-free.
